Mobile Legends Counter Items: What to Buy and When
Complete MLBB counter itemization guide: Dominance Ice, Sea Halberd, Athena Shield, Blade Armor, Winter Trance and more — what to buy against every threat.
Counter Building: The Skill Nobody Coaches
Most players build the same six items every game. Good players build four core items and then answer the enemy comp. Counter itemization is the cheapest power spike in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang — a 2,000-gold item that turns the enemy's main damage source into half damage is worth more than any attack stat you could buy instead. This guide gives you the full counter matrix, explains every defensive item's passive in plain language, and teaches you when to deviate from your default build.
The principle is simple: buy against what's killing you, not against what the enemy team has on paper. If their marksman has done 80% of the damage to you all game, your anti-mage item is worthless no matter how scary their mage looks on the loading screen.
For baseline build paths and what every item does, start with the equipment guide; for role-based core builds, see the builds hub.
The Master Counter Matrix
Read it as: "If the enemy has X → buy Y."
| Enemy Threat | Counter Item | What It Does to Them |
|---|---|---|
| Heavy lifesteal / spell vamp (Esmeralda, Ruby, Karrie builds) | Dominance Ice or Sea Halberd | -50% lifesteal / regen effectiveness in range |
| Burst mage (Eudora, Aurora, Selena) | Athena Shield or Radiant Armor | Magic damage shield / stacking magic damage reduction |
| Critical-based marksman (Ling, Lesley, Miya) | Blade Armor | Reflects a large chunk of crit damage back |
| Sustained physical DPS (attack-speed marksmen like Claude, Moskov, Miya) | Antique Cuirass | Stacks -8% physical attack on attackers per hit |
| Dive assassins (Lancelot, Gusion, Ling, Saber) | Winter Trance / Wind of Nature | Brief invulnerability to physical damage — blanks their entire combo |
| Magic-damage divers (Karina, Harley, Julian) | Rose Gold Meteor | Magic-resist shield that triggers at low HP |
| Strong regen + shields (Estes, Rafaela, Uranus) | Necklace of Dots (Bane-type mages) / Sea Halberd | Regeneration and shield reduction |
| DCC / chain-CC comps (Franco, Atlas, Tigreal) | Tough Boots | Reduces CC duration — the cheapest anti-CC in the game |
| True damage (rare, Karrie ult, Alpha) | Raw HP (Cursed Helmet, Guardian Helmet) | True damage ignores resistances but not big HP pools |
| Split-pushers / sustained duelists (Uranus, Yu Zhong) | Dominance Ice + Antique Cuirass combo | Attack slow plus stacked physical attack reduction |
No single item answers everything — that's why slots 5 and 6 of every build are decisions, not defaults.
Defensive Items Explained One by One
Dominance Ice
- Stats: Physical defense, mana, 5% cooldown reduction.
- Passive: Cuts the lifesteal and regeneration effectiveness of nearby enemies by 50%, and slows their attack speed in the aura radius.
- Who buys it: Tanks, roamers, and fighters who fight at melee range. It's the default third item on Tigreal, Khufra, Hylos.
- Buy when: the enemy has two or more lifesteal/attack-speed reliant heroes — it's both an anti-sustain and anti-marksman aura.
Sea Halberd
- Stats: Physical attack, cooldown reduction, lifesteal.
- Passive: Basic attacks inflict a debuff that reduces the target's lifesteal/regen by 50% for a few seconds.
- Who buys it: Physical carries and fighters who need damage but must answer healers — the "offensive Dominance Ice."
- Buy when: you're a damage dealer and the enemy frontline out-sustains your damage (vs Esmeralda, Uranus, Ruby). Fighters like Yu Zhong and Thamuz buy this mid-late as slot 5.
Athena Shield
- Stats: Magic defense, HP, regeneration.
- Passive: After taking magic damage, gains a shield that absorbs incoming magic damage (scales with level and stacks with itself when re-triggered).
- Who buys it: Frontliners and carries alike — the default anti-burst-mage item in the game.
- Buy when: the enemy has one main burst mage (Eudora, Aurora, Kagura). If they have 2+ magic threats and sustained magic DPS, prefer Radiant Armor.
Radiant Armor
- Stats: Magic defense, HP, regen.
- Passive: Taking magic damage stacks up to heavy permanent magic damage reduction — the more spells hit you, the less each one does.
- Who buys it: Tanks and frontliners.
- Buy when: the enemy has sustained magic damage (Yve, Chang'e, Xavier poke comps) rather than a single burst nuke. Athena vs burst, Radiant vs sustained — this distinction is the most common counter-itemization mistake in ranked.
Blade Armor
- Stats: High physical defense.
- Passive: Reflects a portion of basic-attack damage back at the attacker; crits reflect the crit damage — this is what makes it the anti-crit tool.
- Who buys it: Tanks, and any hero dueling a crit-based marksman.
- Buy when: the enemy marksman is fed and crit-reliant (Miya, Ling, Lesley, Claude builds). The reflection plus your defense often kills the carry who attacks you.
Antique Cuirass
- Stats: HP, physical defense, HP regen.
- Passive: Enemies who basic-attack you lose physical attack, stacking up to three times — up to a 24% physical attack reduction at max stacks in the current patch.
- Who buys it: Frontliners facing physical damage comps.
- Buy when: the enemy damage is skill-based physical (fighters, skill-based assassins) rather than basic-attack based. Pair it with Blade Armor vs full basic-attack comps.
Winter Trance
- Stats: Physical attack, armor, cooldown reduction.
- Active: Freeze yourself for 2 seconds — immune to all damage — then thaw.
- Who buys it: Squishy physical carries and assassins facing dive comps.
- Buy when: Lancelot, Ling, or Saber deletes you every fight. Timing your freeze after their engage skill means their entire combo hits an ice cube.
Wind of Nature
- Stats: Physical attack, attack speed.
- Active: Brief immunity to physical damage (you can still take magic damage).
- Who buys it: Marksmen and attack-based fighters.
- Buy when: the enemy has physical dive/assassins and you can predict the burst window. Wind of Nature beats Winter Trance for DPS heroes because you keep attacking while immune.
Rose Gold Meteor
- Stats: Physical attack, magic defense.
- Passive: When HP drops low, gains a magic-damage absorbing shield for a few seconds.
- Who buys it: Physical carries who need damage plus magic defense in one slot.
- Buy when: the enemy mage dives you (Karina, Harley, Julian) but you can't afford to give up a damage slot for full defense.
Tough Boots
- Stats: Magic defense plus reduced crowd control duration.
- Who buys it: everyone except heavy-attack-speed marksmen (Swift Boots users).
- Buy when: the enemy has two or more reliable CC skills. Against Franco-Atlas comps, this is non-negotiable on every hero.
Immortality
- Stats: Physical defense, HP.
- Passive: Resurrect on the spot with a chunk of HP and a shield after a delay; long internal cooldown.
- Who buys it: everyone, late game.
- Buy when: the game reaches late game and deaths decide fights. The resurrection forces the enemy to waste cooldowns on your corpse.
When to Buy What: Timing Rules
- Before minute 5: almost never counter-build. Core items decide the early game; gold spent on early defense delays your damage spike for fights that haven't started yet. Exception: Tough Boots on tank roamers is always fine.
- Minute 5–10 (items 2–3): first counter item if a threat is clearly established. Their assassin is 4/0? That's when Wind of Nature timing matters on your carry.
- Minute 10–15 (items 4–5): the main counter-item window. By now you know exactly who the enemy damage is flowing through — answer it.
- Minute 15+ (item 6): Immortality or the survival item that covers your remaining weakness. Games are decided by this slot in ranked.
- Reactive rule: if a single enemy hero killed you three times, your next completed item must address them — no exceptions, no "I'm almost done with my Blade of Despair."
Two Practical Examples
Example 1 — You're the marksman. Enemy comp: Lancelot jungle, Eudora mid, Tigreal roam, both 6/2 by minute 8. You're dying instantly in every fight. Answer: finish Wind of Nature (blanks Lancelot's combo), then Rose Gold Meteor (covers Eudora's burst), keep your crit core between them. You've spent two slots, kept your DPS, and now their assassins feed on your ice cube instead of killing you.
Example 2 — You're the tank. Enemy comp: Yu Zhong EXP, Claude gold, Yve mid. Damage types: heavy sustained physical plus sustained magic. Answer: Antique Cuirass (Claude's basic attacks and Yu Zhong's skills both lose value), then Radiant Armor (Yve's sustained beam stacks your reduction), Dominance Ice third (hits both Claude's attack speed and Yu Zhong's lifesteal). Each item answers two enemies at once — that's efficient counter-building.
The Meta Loop: Counter-Building Checks the Meta
Current meta heroes define the default counter buys. In a patch dominated by lifesteal fighters, Dominance Ice and Sea Halberd appear in almost every game; in assassin-heavy metas, Winter Trance and Wind of Nature buy back your team's fights. Check the current meta guide before queuing to know which counter items the patch is quietly demanding, and browse the heroes hub to see exactly what each meta threat's damage profile looks like.
Counter itemization is a habit, not a memorization test. Read the enemy comp at the loading screen, name the two biggest threats out loud, and dedicate your last two item slots to making them irrelevant. That single habit is worth more rank than any amount of combo practice.
