Mobile Legends Roles Guide: All 6 Roles Explained
Learn all 6 MLBB roles: Tank, Fighter, Assassin, Mage, Marksman, Support. Duties, lane assignments, representative heroes, team comp principles, and beginner picks.
What Roles Actually Mean in Mobile Legends
Every hero in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang belongs to at least one of six roles, and understanding them is the fastest way to improve at the game. Roles define three things: what you do in a fight (frontline, backline, utility), where you go on the map (lane assignments), and what your team expects from you at each stage of the game. Pick a role at random every game and you'll climb slowly; master one role deeply and learn a second reasonably, and you'll climb fast.
This guide covers all six roles — Tank, Fighter, Assassin, Mage, Marksman, and Support — with each one's duties, standard lane, representative heroes, and itemization philosophy. If you're brand new, start with the 5v5 basics guide, then come back here to choose your main role. To see which heroes are currently strong in each role, check the tier list and the deeper meta guide.
The 6 Roles at a Glance
| Role | Job in One Sentence | Typical Lane | Difficulty for New Players |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tank | Absorb damage, initiate fights, protect carries | Roam | Easy to start, hard to master |
| Fighter | Bruise frontline, win side lanes, soak pressure | EXP Lane | Beginner-friendly |
| Assassin | Kill the enemy backline, snowball early | Jungle | High skill, high reward |
| Mage | Control the map with AoE damage and CC | Mid Lane | Beginner-friendly |
| Marksman | Deal sustained physical damage, take towers | Gold Lane | Deceptively hard |
| Support | Heal, shield, and buff teammates | Roam | Easy to start, needs game knowledge |
Tank — The Frontline Captain
Duties. Tanks start fights and absorb them. Your responsibilities: scout vision, initiate with hard CC, body-block damage aimed at your carries, and peel when the enemy assassin dives. A tank's damage output is irrelevant; your KDA will look bad and your win rate will look great if you're doing the job right.
How to play it. Walk slightly ahead of your team at all times. Learn each tank's engage tool (Tigreal's ultimate, Atlas's combo, Khufra's bounce) and track enemy blink/escape cooldowns before committing. In the current patch, roam tanks also control early tempo by securing vision around the turtle pit.
Representative heroes: Tigreal, Franco, Atlas, Khufra, Hylos, Grock.
Item philosophy: full defense — Cursed Helmet, Athena Shield / Radiant Armor, Blade Armor, Immortality. You scale with HP and resistances, not damage. See the equipment guide for details.
Fighter — The Self-Sustaining Bruiser
Duties. Fighters hold the EXP lane and become the team's second frontline. You win your lane through sustained trading, take tower pressure on the side, and join fights with a mix of durability and real damage. Many fighters also split-push when the enemy groups.
How to play it. EXP lane is a skill-matchup lane: expect long 1v1s. Learn your power spikes (usually level 4 and first two items), respect the enemy jungler's gank angles, and don't chase kills past the river — a dead EXP laner means a lost turtle. For hero picks this patch, see the EXP lane tier list.
Representative heroes: Yu Zhong, Paquito, Ruby, Esmeralda, Thamuz, X.Borg.
Item philosophy: sustain plus damage — War Axe, Oracle or Queen's Wings, then situational defense. Fighters itemize flexibly based on the matchup.
Assassin — The Backline Executioner
Duties. Assassins farm the jungle, control the early tempo, and kill the enemy damage dealers. You are the team's win condition in the mid game: every rotation should end with either a kill, an objective, or map pressure the enemy has to answer.
How to play it. Clear buffs efficiently, gank the most overextended lane, secure the turtle with Retribution, and never start a team fight first unless the enemy's CC is down. Assassins live and die by target selection — the tank is not your fight. Dedicated hero guides: Lancelot, Gusion, Ling, Fanny, Hayabusa, Saber, Karina.
Item philosophy: penetration plus burst — Blade of the Heptaseas / Endless Battle / Malefic Roar for physical assassins; Clock of Destiny / Holy Crystal / Genius Wand for magical ones.
Mage — The Map Controller
Duties. Mages hold mid lane, control waves, and deal area damage and crowd control in every fight. You're also the team's secondary damage source behind the marksman — poke before fights, lock down divers during them, and clear waves so your team always has map control.
How to play it. Push the wave, then rotate. A mid laner who afk-farms creeps is wasted: your job is to show up at the turtle with your ultimate ready. Position behind your frontline, and never face-check bushes — a caught mage is a lost fight. Hero guides: Kagura, Odette, Xavier, Yve, Vale.
Item philosophy: cooldown reduction then burst — Clock of Destiny, Lightning Truncheon, Holy Crystal, Genius Wand / Divine Glaive. Support-style mages (like Angela) build utility instead.
Marksman — The Late-Game Insurance
Duties. Marksmen farm the gold lane, scale into the late game, and provide the sustained damage that breaks tanks and takes towers. You deal the most total damage in most matches — if you survive.
How to play it. Farm efficiently for the first eight minutes (gold lane is designed for this), avoid fights until your two core items are up, and never walk into an unwarded flank. In team fights your position is everything: stand behind your frontline, attack the nearest safe target, and let assassins come to you rather than chasing. Hero guides: Layla, Hanabi, Beatrix, Claude, Moskov.
Item philosophy: attack speed and crit scaling — Windtalker, Berserker's Fury, Golden Staff / Demon Hunter Sword depending on the hero, Blade of Despair late.
Support — The Force Multiplier
Duties. Supports walk with the jungler or marksman, providing heals, shields, movement buffs, and extra crowd control. You make your carries stronger than their counterparts. Supports also share vision control and roam cooldowns with the tank.
How to play it. Follow the early tempo plan (usually protecting the jungler's first clear), then shadow the winning carry. Track your core heal/shield cooldowns as carefully as an assassin tracks combos — using your ultimate one second after it mattered is the classic support throw. Hero guides: Estes, Angela, Floryn, Rafaela, Diggie.
Item philosophy: utility and cooldown — Dominance Ice (also counters enemy lifesteal), Necklace of Dots vs regen comps, Fleeting Time for ultimate uptime, Immortality late.
Lane Assignments: Who Goes Where
| Lane | Standard Assignment | Why |
|---|---|---|
| EXP Lane | Fighter | Sustained 1v1s favor bruisers; solo XP feeds their level spikes |
| Mid Lane | Mage | Central rotation position fits waveclear and roam power |
| Gold Lane | Marksman (+ Support early) | Lane gives extra gold; MM needs it most |
| Jungle | Assassin / Fighter | Retribution + emblem scaling rewards farming heroes |
| Roam | Tank / Support | Early vision and tempo for the whole map |
Team Composition Principles
Great teams aren't five good players on five random heroes — they're five roles that fit together. Core principles:
- The standard shape. Think of every good comp as five functions: one frontline initiator, one main damage carry, one secondary damage, one roamer, and one flex. The classic 1-3-1 map shape (one side laner, a rotating mid trio, and the gold laner farming) flows naturally from those functions.
- Damage balance. Pair a physical carry with a magical one. All-physical comps lose to a single Blade Armor + Antique Cuirass build; all-magic comps lose to Radiant Armor.
- Frontline ratio. At least one true initiator-tank; two frontline options (tank + fighter) is the meta comfort zone. Five squishies lose to any coordinated dive.
- CC chain. Fights are won by CC chains — follow-up damage only works if the setup CC lands first. Draft at least two reliable forms of hard CC.
- Win condition timing. Late-game comps (Layla, Cecilion) must survive early; early-game comps (Ling, Gusion) must not drag games past 15 minutes.
Which Role Should a Beginner Pick?
Ranked by how forgiving they are while you learn the game:
- Mage (mid lane) — teaches wave management, rotations, and positioning from a safe distance. Kagura is complex, but Eudora, Vale, and Xavier are point-and-simple.
- Tank (roam) — low mechanical demand, maximum game knowledge gain; you see the whole map's flow every game.
- Fighter (EXP lane) — teaches 1v1 trading, level spikes, and split-push pressure with forgiving sustain.
- Support — easy to contribute, but teaches less about carrying; good second role.
- Marksman (gold lane) — the mechanical basics are simple, but the positioning lessons are brutal; expect to feed while learning.
- Assassin (jungle) — the highest-skill, highest-blame role. Learn it after you understand rotations, or grind it in Classic first.
